88.9 WERS is Boston’s distinguished public radio station operated by Emerson College. As a student-run yet professionally managed entity, it relies on listener support to sustain its operations. The station offers a diverse and eclectic programming schedule, featuring a mix of contemporary and classic tracks from local, alternative, indie, and iconic artists, all broadcast without commercial interruption. Its specialty shows include in-studio live performances by local bands, showtunes, soul and R&B genres, acoustic singer-songwriters, as well as Jewish music and humor segments.
Established in 1949, WERS has a longstanding history of serving the New England community through music, news coverage, public service announcements, and culturally relevant events. The accompanying app provides live streams of three stations: 88.9 WERS, ERS+ The Black Experience, and Standing Room Only—a continuous 24-hour broadcast dedicated to Broadway productions and showtunes. Additional features include curated playlists, the latest music news, and comprehensive program schedules. Users are also able to support the station through donations and can submit audio messages for on-air playback.
